Things You Can Do For Peace

At Kate Hawkins’ May Day fest Thursday in Cedar Rapids (see Ramblin’ in The Gazette on Friday, May 2), dozens upon dozens of folks showed up to enjoy gorgeous and great tasting homemade cookies and to leave behind cans/boxes of food as well as money for the Linn County Food Bank.

Always one to promote social networking and one another getting along, Kate handed out a one-sheet flier with her ideas on “Things You Can Do For Peace.” Some of her suggestions:

  • Smile at Children
  • Look for similarities, not differences
  • Read about other cultures
  • Laugh with people, not at them
  • Practice patience
  • Remember we all share the same Earth
  • Read more newspapers and watch less entertainment news
  • Don’t let fear control you
  • Think before you speak
  • Remember your own mistakes
  • Be curious
  • Attend a cultural celebration
  • Think before you act
  • Dwell on the positive, not the negative
  • Work at keeping an open mind
  • Encourage others
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Apologize when you’re wrong
  • Drive courteously
  • Do a random act of kindness
  • Love more
  • Pray for peace
