TV – Take it or leave it

Roy O’Sullivan, he of Irish descent and a decent Irishman to boot, can pretty much take TV or leave it.

As the subject of my St. Patrick’s Day Ramblin’ column on Monday, we met Roy at his Hawkeyed Upholstery Shop in North Liberty and learned of his birth in Cork City, Ireland, his welcome immigration to America and how he started his shop 2 1/2 years ago.

What I didn’t tell you is that Roy, 40, doesn’t have a television in his apartment. He only has a small television set in a corner of his shop connected to nothing but an old twisted, welded and bent-in-the-proper-direction antenna. At first Roy would figit with the rabbit ears when the picture became fuzzy and was satisfied with whatever picture he could get. But, when a show he wanted to catch had nothing but ghosts, Roy rigged up the indoor antenna outside of his business. It worked fine, meaning Roy didn’t need cable or satellite TV.

“I’m going to be one of the last men standing,” Roy jokes.

That is, until next year, when analog TV no longer works. Then Roy will have to decide. TV or not TV? That’s the question.
